Guide to Download and Configure Android Studio on Windows, Linux and Mac

So you are going to start Android Development, that’s great. If you have read my previous post (Thinking Of Android Development – But Don’t Know Where To Start From) then you would have some idea about what you need before starting android development. Now in this post i am going to talk about the requirement of Android Studio and how to setup Android Studio on Windows, Linux and Mac operating system.

Before starting Android Development make sure your system reach the minimum requirement for Android Studio:

Criterion Description
OS version Windows 7 or later
Mac OS X 10.9.5 or later
GNOME or KDE desktop
RAM 3 GB RAM minimum, 8 GB RAM recommended; plus 1 GB for the Android Emulator
Disk space 500 MB disk space for Android Studio, at least 1.5 GB for Android SDK, emulator system images, and caches
Java version Java Development Kit (JDK) 8
Screen resolution 1280×800 minimum screen resolution

System has minimum requirement, now download Java and Android Studio:

  • First download and install Java according to your OS. (Java comes pre-install on most Linux distro)
  • Now download Android Studio according to your operating system from Android Studio website. If you have 64 bit Windows then android-studio-bundle is recommended.

Download has completed, what next:

  • Installing and running.
    • For Windows and Mac – Simply install Android Studio like any other application then run it.
    • For Linux –
      • Unzip Android Studio like unzip
      • Now get in to “bin” folder like cd android-studio-ide-162.4069837-linux/android-studio/bin
      • Now run application like sh or ./
  • For the first run it will ask for many configuration,  you can just keep the default setting and click “OK” or “Next” for all the dialog.  Here are some screen shot.
  • There will be a dialog asking to download Android Studio, click “Next” and let the download start. Here is the screen shot for this.

And your setup for Android Studio has been completed.
